Alex Csiszar ist Wissenschaftshistoriker an der Harvard University<\/a> und hat vor einiger Zeit einen Aufsatz mit dem Titel "Seriality and the Search for Order: Scientific Print and its Problems during the Late Nineteenth Century" veröffentlicht (History of Science 48 (2010) 399-434). Dieser Artikel ist auch als Open-Access-Version zugreifbar<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dieser Aufsatz ist dieses Jahr auch in deutscher Sprache erschienen:

"Der Aufsatz skizziert Elemente einer Geschichte der wissenschaftlichen Literaturrecherche in Frankreich und Gro\u00dfbritannien im späten 19. Jahrhundert. […] Erst zu dem Zeitpunkt, an dem wissenschaftliches Wissen zunehmend zu einer Landschaft wissenschaftlicher Zeitschriften wurde und eine teilweise Sichtbarkeit bekam, nahmen die Forderungen nach einer umfassenden Sicht auf diese Landschaft an Dringlichkeit zu."<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Der Artikel beschreibt Wege und Probleme der Literaturrecherche beim Aufkommen der immer zahlreicher werdenden Fachzeitschriften – im Artikel als "The machinery of scientific periodicals" bezeichnet – ebenso wie Versuche der Lösung durch Bibliographien wie z.B. den Catalog of Scientific Papers der Royal Society bzw. durch "Hommes a fiches" am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts, von denen der im letzten Blog-Beitrag genannte Paul Otlet nur der bekannteste ist.<\/p>\n

Ein Blick auf die Geschichte bietet oft auch die Möglichkeit, die Gegenwart in einem anderen Licht zu sehen. In Csiszars Aufsatz findet man solche – gerade auch aus heutiger Sicht interessante – Aussagen und Zitate wie (Angegebene Seitenzahlen beziehen sich auf die Open-Accesse-Version des Artikels):<\/p>\n

"By 1900, the mathematician and physicist Henri Poincar\u00e9 was deploying a vision of science in which nature was no longer a single bound book at all but instead was figured as a vast expanse of print matter, a body the scientist did not so much read through, as search, select from, and catalogue." "[…] it is often forgotten that the rediscovery in the library may be a more difficult and uncertain process than the first discovery in the laboratory."
